BAKER BLASTS BAYSOX PAST SQUIRRELS, 10-1

BOWIE, MD – Aaron Baker blasted two three-run home runs as the Bowie Baysox (44-45) won going away, 10-1, over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (42-48) at Prince George’s Stadium on Thursday night.  The Squirrels sunk to a season-worst six games under .500 with the loss in the series opener.

The Squirrels got out to a quick start in the top of the first inning against Bowie righty Devin Jones.  Jones walked Joe Panik with one out to get the Squirrels started.  Panik advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored for a 1-0 lead when Adam Duvall lined a single into right field.

Jones worked four innings and retired for the night despite his effectiveness.  He finished his outing having retired seven consecutive batters.  He allowed just the lone run on two hits, walked one and struck out four.

Richmond left-hander Chris Gloor worked around four walks to keep Bowie at bay through the first four innings.  However, they drew even in the ballgame in the fifth.  Chris Pettit led off and cracked a double off the wall in left-center field.  He moved to third on a fly out and scored to tie the game, 1-1, when Kyle Hudson lined a sacrifice fly to left field.

Ronny Paulino led off the sixth inning with a single off Gloor and it signaled trouble ahead.  Brandon Waring followed and lofted a fly ball to center field.  Ryan Lollis lost it in the lights and it fell for a double.  Baker followed and cranked a three-run home run just fair down the right-field line.  The clout gave Bowie a 4-1 lead and knocked Gloor from the ballgame.

Gloor (6-5) took the loss over five innings plus three batters.  He was charged with four runs, all earned, on five hits.  He walked a season-high four and struck out five as he endured his second loss to the Baysox.

Right-hander Matt Bischoff (3-1) entered in relief of Jones in the fifth inning.  He turned in three solid innings of scoreless relief.  He earned the win, facing just one over the minimum in his time on the hill.

The Baysox added a pair of runs off righty Drew Bowlin in the seventh.  Josh Horton knocked in Waring and Baker with a double off the mitt of Jarrett Parker in right field to give Bowie a 6-1 advantage.

Right-hander Scott Shuman entered for the eighth inning and walked the bases loaded on 12 pitches – all balls.  He was lifted for Tom Vessella and the lefty uncorked a wild pitch to bring in one run.  Baker then smacked his second three-run home run down the right-field line to cap the scoring, 10-1.  Shuman has charged with three runs, and has now conceded seven runs over his last two outings without recording an out.

Right-hander Zech Zinicola came on to polish over the Squirrels.  Zinicola finished the ballgame with two scoreless innings of relief.  He struck out four in the process.

The two clubs will play a doubleheader at Prince George’s Stadium on Friday night beginning at 6:05 p.m.  Richmond will throw RHP Craig Westcott (3-9, 3.88) in game one and LHP Ryan Bradley (0-4, 7.02) in game two.  Bowie will counter with RHP Tim Bascom (2-1, 2.43) in game one and LHP Chris Petrini (3-4. 3.52).  The Flying Squirrels Pregame Warmup will begin at 5:35 p.m. on Sports Radio 910, SportsRadio910.com and IHeart Radio.
